    An Interacting Scenario for Dark Energy in Bianchi Type-I Universe

    We study the interaction between dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM) in the scope of anisotropic bianchi type I space-time. First we derive the general form of the dark energy equation of state parameter (EoS) in both non-interacting and interacting cases and then we examine it's future by applying a hyperbolic scale factor. It is shown that in non-interacting case, depending on the value of the anisotropy parameter KK, the dark energy EoS parameter is varying from phantom to quintessence whereas in interacting case EoS parameter vary in quintessence region. However, in both cases the dark energy EoS parameter ωde\omega^{de}, ultimately (i. e at z=1z=-1) tends to the cosmological constant (ωde=1\omega^{de}=-1).     Mediators of mechanotransduction between bone cells

    Mechanical forces are known to regulate the function of tissues in the body, including bone. Bone adapts to its mechanical environment by altering its shape and increasing its size in response to increases in mechanical load associated with exercise, and by decreasing its size in response to decreases in mechanical load associated with microgravity or prolonged bed rest. Changes in bone size and shape are produced by a cooperative action of two main types of the bone cells - osteoclasts that destroy bone and osteoblasts that build bone. These cell types come from different developmental origins, and vary greatly in their characteristics, such as size, shape, and expression of receptor subtypes, which potentially may affect their responses to mechanical stimuli. The objective of this study is to compare the responses of osteoclasts and osteoblasts to mechanical stimulation. This study has allowed us to conclude the following: 1. A mediator is released from a single source cell. 2. The response to the mediator changes with distance. 3. The value of the apparent diffusion coeficient increases with distance. 4. A plausible proposed mechanism is that ATP is released and degrades to ADP. 5. Future experiments are required to confim that ATP is the mediator as suggested

    Social marketing of insecticide-treated bednets: The case for Pakistan

    With an estimated half a million cases of malaria annually in Pakistan, and drug resistant cases on the increase, more practical preventive measures such as insecticide-treated bednets are essential. Social marketing through commercial channels has become an important cost-effective means to deliver health products and services to low income people and to motivate them to use these services. It has been demonstrated that social marketing of insecticide-treated bednets has saved the lives of millions of people in malaria-endemic regions at a cost as low as U.S. $2 per person. Social marketing could be an effective strategy for getting insecticide-treated nets to poor communities in Pakistan who are most vulnerable to malaria

    An Alternative Proposal of Justice: Muslim Women Activists and Socio-Legal Realities in India

    In India, with the change of political leadership at the center, the sanctity of religion- based Muslim family law has been contested. This has led to the development of a new socio-political discourse which is influenced and shaped by the basic feminist ideals of equal rights for women. In this discourse, Muslim women are portrayed as necessarily suffering from unjust family laws and needing immediate cover and protection from the secular state. In the light of the judicial reform which makes the practice of instant divorce through ‘triple talaq’ among Muslims a punishable offence, this article discusses that for Muslim women the domain of law is liminal and they choose between multiple legal forums to increase their access to justice. It explores how Muslim women approach different alternative forums, and in what ways Muslim women activists are creating an opportunity for the distressed women to resolve their marital disputes more efficiently. Such an examination provides important insights into how Muslim women’s rights activists undertake their pursuit of justice within a complex, legally pluralistic landscape in the area of Muslim family law in India

    Standalone Green Cache Points for Vehicular Content Distribution Networks

    With the rapid growth of interest in media-rich user experience, content distribution networks (CDNs) gained considerable attention. Since, most of the energy is consumed by cache points (CPs) and the associated equipment, it is imperative to deploy fewer number of CPs or switch off as many as possible to save energy. This results in degraded quality of service (QoS). It is an usual dimensioning technique to optimise the number and locations of caching points (CPs) of a content distribution network (CDN), where the objective is to reduce operational energy. In this paper, we reduce non-renewable energy consumption (carbon footprint) by introducing renewable grid energy (in the form of wind energy) and adaptive CPs. Further, we propose algorithms for provisioning high number of simultaneous downloads, which reduce overall waiting time and number of dropped request of city vehicular users. The end result is substantial improvement in quality of service (QoS). The proposed CPs save 100% grid energy during the whole day while fulfilling content demand in a city vehicular environment

    The Government of Pakistan, like many other developing countries, has opted for tax holidays as an important fiscal measure to encourage rapid industrialisation in the backward areas. This concession is also supplemented by several other economic and non-economic measures including import duty, and depreciation allowances. Mintz (1990) discusses the efficacy of tax holidays in the presence of accelerated depreciation allowances concludes that tax holidays which are designed to increase capital formation may end up penalising capital formation. Mintz’s (1990) conclusion is based on the assumption that if the assets are long-lived, and the income tax system allows deductibility of accelerated depreciation but cannot be deferred, then the tax holidays, by preventing depreciation deduction in the early period may actually penalise investment during the tax holiday period. If on the other hand the depreciation allowance is deferred till the end of tax holiday period, the tax system is genuinely generous and provides a real incentive for capital formation

    AbstractFacilitators are the backbone of the PBL system which focuses on the integrated learning. At BBS, facilitators are both the Teaching Assistants and faculty members. It is observed that students prefer having TAs as their facilitators. Data was collected through standard facilitation evaluation form filled by the students at the end of each teaching module. Our data suggests that there is no difference in the overall facilitation skills of TAs and the faculty members. It appears that in attributes such as ‘asking appropriate question, prioritize learning objectives and identifying misconceptions’, the TAs perform better than the faculty members

In Pakistan the tax code are such that the firms in the tax holidays region are not allowed to claim or defer accelerated depreciation allowance but can claim normal depreciation allowance only after the expiry of tax holidays period. Whereas the firms in developed areas can claim both accelerated (25 percent) and normal depreciation allowances (10 percent) annually. Import duty concession is given for most of the underdeveloped areas and few of the developed areas. These different sets of incentives affects the cost of capital and hence investment differently. The purpose of the present paper is to see these effects by computing the cost of capital for developed and under developed areas. This will help us to examine whether the tax holidays as an incentive is effective or act as a barrier to claim other generous concession like the depreciation allowance.

    Diversity of Urinary Tract Pathogens and Drug Resistant Isolates of Escherichia coli in different age and gender Groups of Pakistanis

    Purpose: This paper was mainly aimed to investigate drug resistance of the various urinary tract infection (UTI) pathogens from patients of different gender and age groups of Pakistanis. Method: For these purposes, urine samples of 109 patients were analyzed. Samples were screened on CLED agar. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by Kirby Bauer\'s disc diffusion method. Isolated colonies were processed for biochemical characterization and antibiotic sensitivity to ampicillin, amikacin, augmentin, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefuroxime, cotrimoxazole, ciprofloxin, imipenem, meropenem, tazocine, trimethoprim, gentamicin and nitrofuratoin. Result: E.Coli was found to be the most frequent causative agent of UTIs (66%) followed by Enterococci (8.3%), Candida spp. and Pseodomonas spp. (7.3% each), Klebsiella spp. (5.5%) and Enterobacter spp. (2.7%). Proteus. and Morgenella species were found in less than 1% of the cases. E.coli showed variable antimicrobial resistance to different antibiotics as 92%, 86%, 80%, 62%, 47%, 20% and 4% of the isolates were found to be resistant to ampicillin, cotrimoxazole, ciprofloxin, gentamicin, nitrofuratoin and amikacin, respectively. Conclusion: The most effective in vitro agents were found to be amikacin followed by gentamicin (among the parenterals), and ciprofloxin among the orally administratered ones. A higher prevalence of UTIs was observed in the female population and E.coli showed no resistance to nitrofuratoin in age groups of 50+ and 70+ in both genders.
